When we first went to the shelter, we had made an appointment to meet with a few other dogs. However, when we told the shelter we’d come back another time, they asked us to wait because there was one more dog they wanted to show us. That’s when Short Stuff—his original name—came out, a 1.5-year-old mixed Dachshund Pitbull with his tail wagging. We had the chance to walk him and spend some time together, and right away, we knew he was the one. He picked us, too.
Shorty was with us through many seasons of our lives, through the ups and downs. He was such a sensitive little guy. Whenever we raised our voices or spoke loudly, he would come over and offer his belly, looking up at us with those soulful eyes. He knew how to comfort us when we were sad, and his presence made everything feel just a little bit better.
Shorty was brave, too. He once jumped onto the dining table to sneak a bite of food—fish, rice, chicken, and even chips. One day, while we were in the backyard, I noticed him coming in and out of the doggy door, and I had a feeling something was up. When I checked, I found him on the dining table, happily munching away on the fish. We even caught him on camera taking chips from the couch while barking outside. He was our little mischievous guard dog, always barking at the mailman or a cat that came near the fence. When we had guests, he’d watch them closely and follow them wherever they went.
Outdoors, he didn’t bark much, but he was always nosy, listening intently whenever he heard people talking. He loved long walks, despite his short legs, and he especially loved going to the beach. He was also amazing with puzzles—he could solve them like a pro. At night, he’d nestle his head on my shoulder and give me sweet little kisses. That was our nightly routine.
Shorty was a healthy, happy pup until he turned 10. He developed heart disease, but that didn’t stop him from enjoying life. Even as he got older, he faced a few health challenges, but he always seemed to bounce back. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it to his next birthday. This is a heartbreaking loss, and he’s left a deep void in our hearts, just like his brother, Mister.
Hardest goodbye. Although Shorty is no longer physically with us, his spirit will always remain. I’ll carry his memory with me forever—in those quiet moments when I feel his presence and in the love we shared that can never be replaced.
Goodbye, my sweet Shorty. I will love you always and carry you in my heart. Thank you for all the joy, love, and companionship you gave me.

I know that you loved your Mama so much. You share an unbroken bond together. You will never leave her because you watch her everyday and letting her know with signs.
Each time your Mama takes her breath, she will be taking one for you. She will carry your strength inside of her. You will always live forever in your Mama’s heart.
